Although no specifics have been released, a panel of state legislators plans to pitch property tax relief recommendations to the 81st Texas Legislature, which convenes in five weeks.

Thirteen members of the House Select Committee on Property Tax Relief and Appraisal Reform met in Austin yesterday and addressed hot issues such as appraisal caps, sales price disclosure, swapping school property tax for a higher sales tax with fewer exemptions, creating regional appraisal review boards, reforming tax rate calculations and reforming equity protests.

Rep. Dan Flynn, who has long touted the idea of swapping school property taxes for a higher sales tax, said that although nothing is definite yet, there will be some legislation drafted in the next few weeks or months.

“I’ve been in about 25 town hall meetings, and what I heard over and over is that people want us to do something,” Flynn said. “That is why we need to address this issue.”
